Day Book Series

Books from this detailed, well-written British series are hard-to-find in the United States. These are excellent for junior high and even high school level. I would not suggest paying stratospheric prices for them--perhaps $15-20 at most. Some should be available for $10 or less.

These were published in the early 1970's by Robert Tyndall in Great Britain, South Africa, and Australia and by Abelard-Schuman in New York (but probably not all titles).

Each book follows several characters through daily life--a king, a merchant or priest, a soldier or peasant, a woman, and a child. The books are well-written, carefully researched, and are illustrated with clear color and black-and-white reproductions of contemporary objects.

I have also read them aloud to younger children, but with younger ones it works better, imho, to read all of a character's story in sequence. (The text switches between characters throughout the day.)

I have been unable to verify that the books marked with asterisks were published. They are listed as future publications on the dust jackets of books that I own.

These books are all very hard-to-find in the US; most are more readily available in Canada and the UK.
